1999 BDASA | Design Excellence Award
Residential Additions & Alterations < $50,000 category
Award of Excellence Winner
Judges Comments:
"This amazing transformation enlivens a fairly dull 30yr old home into a modern looking one, appropriate to its coastal location. It has, by rendering, repainting and the addition of a new frontage, transformed the house, changing it internally and externally into a modern house of the 90's. It is also of the few houses in this year's awards program to present to the public the possibilities and advantages of a clever, but relatively cheap, upgrade, and one which represents a huge potential for the designers' market."

Award of Excellence Winner
Geoff & Hazel's Hills Retreat, Aldgate
(A combined residence and "backpacker" facility)
Judges Comments:
"This house/hostel combination is a "delightful folly" - almost whimsical in its design approach to the provision of the back-packers hostel. The extensive use of recycled materials, colour and appropriate use of materials both in its setting and for its function, set it apart from the others. It provides a refreshing example of innovative and responsive design."
